Welcome to our website and thank you for taking the time to visit us and our dogs. Takari Kennels is owned by Tari and Karl Hafner. It is located just south of Fulton, NY below Lake Ontario. Dogs have always been part of both of our lives so it was natural to become involved with them as time went by. Karl is an avid backpacker and part of the reason we got our first Bernese was so that he would have a backpacking buddy to go with him.

We obtained our first Bernese Mountain Dog puppy in 1988 and have been actively involved ever since. Tari has been a member of the BMDCA (Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America) since 1988. She is also a member of the HBMDCNY (Helderberg Bernese Mountain Dog Club of New York).  She served as president of the BMDCFL (Bernese Mountain Dog Club of the Finger Laeks) for 2 years, board member for 3 years and newsletter editor for many years. In 2005 she chaired the BMDCA National Specialty held in Gettysburg, PA. To date, this is the largest National Specialty ever held for Bernese ranking as the 8th largest specialty of all AKC breeds for 2005.

Tari is also a member of the ACKCSC (American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club) and is a founding member of the CKCSCNENY (Cavalier King Charles Club of North Eastern New York). Our first Cavalier came to live with us in 1996. She was already grown and gave us our first Champion Cavalier.

Tari is a member of the local all breed dog club, OKA (Onondaga Kennel Association). Needless to say, she is very involved with dogs at all levels.

Karl is a Family Practice physician in private practice in the town of Fulton. He has been in practice since 1983 in this community. We have two children, Jeff and Danielle. Jeff is attending the University at Buffalo in NY where he is working on his PhD in Physics and Danielle is in Loma Linda, CA where she is in medical school.

Please take the time to look through our site and visit with our lovely dogs. Our breeding goals are to improve the breed through careful line-breeding and out-crossing. Whenever we breed a litter  it is with the intention of keeping a puppy. Therefore, we try not to produce puppies unless we feel that they will possess those qualities that we wish to keep. We strive to produce puppies that will serve as companions but which will also be capable of doing many types of jobs such as obedience, agility, draft and other jobs usually performed by their breed.

Puppies in both of our breeds are sold either as pets or with the potential for showing. Potential is just that, potential. It is not a guarantee that they will easily attain a title but that they appear to have that potential as puppies. Puppies sold as pets will go to their new homes with a limited registration meaning that they may not be bred and must be spayed or neutered when they are old enough.
